It’s resurrection time, folks!

Like many other internet folk, I get my TV fix from Hulu. I’ve noticed of late that they’ve been suggesting Dragon Quest IX to me. What surprised me was how girl-centric the campaign was! This was the first one I saw, and unsurprisingly, Genna’s Adventure was what I expected: it focused on the dress-up aspects alone. Which is fine, you know! The only thing that interests me about DQIX is the fashion aspect of it, and it’s a great gateway to getting girls who may be ambivalent about RPGs to give ‘em a shot.

But wait! Aren’t you offended that they’re marketing it on fashion alone? Isn’t that a bit stereotypical?

Yeah, it would have been worse if it hadn’t been followed by this and this, which both are quite gender-neutral in that they just talk about party building and gameplay. The rest of them are pretty neat as well (and that includes all of them!).

It’s nice to see a commercial about games where the girl isn’t relegated to the role of “clueless girlfriend”. It’s a step in the right direction, Nintendo.

Oh, I should probably mention the Seth Green ones, even though they’re, like, totally ancient by internet standards. I like the fact that they turned things on their head and made the fashion-based one about the guy (his delivery of “It’s a ponchoooooo.” is the best thing!) instead of trying to court the girls that way. More thumbs ups for Nintendo there!

While I’m trying to figure out how to procure enough images for my first real feature, I’ll distract you with this feature that showed up on my Twitter feed (thanks, @NintendoTheory!) about the gender divide not in the games, but the industry itself. It’s a short read, but will give you a bit to think about while I continue assembling my first “real” post.

It’s bad for your complexion, you know."

The notable thing about this re-re-release is that you can choose the gender of your main character, and that it (supposedly) changes the entire dynamic of the game. It’s true, it does change things, but having played the tutorial sections for each main character, I’m not convinced all of the changes are good ones.

However, reading some men complain about how weird it feels to play as a girl is really amusing for obvious reasons.
